One of America’s busiest Lindy and Balboa teachers, Valerie has a reputation for her finesse on the dance floor. She emphasizes musicality and connection regardless of the style of swing.
Valerie Salstrom began her relationship with Balboa in the mid 1990s when she first saw it danced at the Casino Ballroom on Catalina Island, California. She started researching this quirky dance and that path quickly lead her to the incomparable Sylvia Sykes. Valerie began taking private lessons with Sylvia and through her she was able to meet some of the original innovators and historians of Balboa and Bal-Swing like Maxie Dorf, Willie Desatoff, Ann & John Mills, Dean Raftery, Bart Bartolo and Dwight Lupardis. Valerie has a very playful and fun attitude when it comes to both dancing and teaching. She loves being in the classroom sharing her ideas and passing along the information she gleaned from the old timers. She is eager to teach beginners through advanced dancers. Valerie enjoys the excitement of competing and some of her accomplishments with Jacob Wigger include, winning the 2015, 2014, 2011, 2010 Open Balboa division at Camp Hollywood, the 2011 & 2008 International Balboa Championships at Balboa Rendezvous, and the 2013 Open Classic division at the Eastern Balboa Championships. In 2001 Valerie’s passion for Balboa inspired her to co-found the first event dedicated solely to Balboa, the All Balboa Weekend in Cleveland, Ohio. The All Balboa Weekend is the largest Balboa camp in the world and one of the best places to go for top notch instruction, inspiring competitions, and fulfilling social dancing.
